<image:title>Artists - capleton - capleton</image:title>
<image:caption>Born Clifton George Bailey III on April 13, 1967, in the rural parish of St. Mary, Capleton earned his future stage name from friends who were so impressed with his sharp reasoning skills that they named him after the most famous lawyer in town. From a tender young age, he was a lover of the traveling sound systems, sneaking out at night to catch the vibes until dawn. But it wasn’t until he turned 18 and moved to Kingston that he was able to realize his destiny. In the fast-moving world of dancehall reggae, fame and success are hard to obtain and easy to lose. Fans can be fickle, and trends change in the blink of an eye, leaving most entertainers with painfully short career spans. Only a rare few can remain relevant from year to year, holding their audience’s attention and leaving them crying for more. Capleton’s lyrics are deep, precise, and thoughtful. His live stage shows are consistently dynamic, explosive performances. Capleton’s remarkable staying power and longevity may be his greatest gift. While the veteran DJ‚s words and works long ago earned him the title of “The Prophet”. He is also referred to as King Shango, King David, The Fireman. His record label, office, and home for his direct supporters is called David House Productions.”Anytime you try to uplift righteousness and upliftment of the people them, then you ah go get a fight”, says the hottest entertainer in the worldwide reggae fraternity. “Bob Marley come do it and them fight him. And when Bob Marley dead, that’s when they start to endorse him. I already aware of this, I am not unaware. So I know the more them fight I is the more I get stronger” It was Stewart Brown, owner of a Toronto-based sound called African Star, who gave the untested artist his first break, flying him to Canada for a stage show alongside giants like Ninjaman and Flourgon. The audience poured out their appreciation, and he never looked back. When Capleton first burst on the scene in the late 1980s, the dancehall was a very different place than it is today. Slackness and gun talk were the order of the day. This bright promising newcomer announced his arrival with a string of hit songs from “Bumbo Red” to “Number One on the Look Good Chart” and “Lotion Man.” Everything he touched hit the sound-good charts, and the youthful artist with the nimble vocabulary and hardcore voice quickly established himself as one of dancehall‚s most reliable hitmakers. But even he could not have predicted that eleven years later, at the start of the new millennium, he would be dancehall’s ruling voice. “I think the people dem see say me really deserve that because of the amount of years me put in,” Capleton says, “and we never really bow and we still hold the faith. We stand up for whatever we a say. Yeah and we really work for it. And them say by your works, a so you get your pay. The people them see the amount of fight me face and the whole heap of accusation. And me still never give up” When he dropped the tune “Alms House” in 1992, Capleton established himself as more than an entertainer but as a guiding light of righteousness through music. “United we stand and divided we fall,” he sang for the benefit of his fans and dancehall comrades. “Nuff of them nah go know themself till them back against the wall.” A few years later he came back with yet another antidote to the clashing and rivlary that had taken hold of the dancehall business. “Music is a mission,” he reminded his fellow artists, “not a competition. Some man use the music to cause confusion.” The path of this dancehall Prophet was clearly established in 1994 with a string of songs that declared his newfound faith in Rastafari. “INI sight up the light and see say really, yunno, Rasta is real,” he recalls. “founder of the world, because Rasta did come set the trend. Y‚unnerstand. Rasta is life.” The first words of his mega-hit “Dis The Trinity” made it plain that the DJ had experienced some kind of revelation. “I was once lost but now I‚m found,” he stated, “Selassie I live every time.” Capleton became a strong advocate of the teaching of the Jamaican National Hero, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and advocate of universal black repatriation. “Babylon rewarded us with hatred for our love,” he declares. “They taught us to rape, steal and kill. For instance, they stole our literature and taught it back to us in a different manner so as to infiltrate our minds with foolishness and other misconceptions. Now we as black men do not see ourselves as prince and prophets, but as punks and guys. Our women do not see themselves as queens, princesses or empresses anymore, but as harlots and concubines.” The only solution, as Bob Marley advocated, is to emancipate oneself from mental slavery. “Over the years INI as a nation and a people, them no really teach INI nuttin‚ bout INI black self. You know I mean? Them teach INI them give we European philosophy. So INI and some other youths a try emerge now, we ask certain question and we ask fi certain things. Caw we know say an institute, or in a college, or in a certain organization we need we Ethiopian curriculum, we need the black man thing. We need to know about weself. Becaw the prophet Marcus Garvey did show we say, A nation without no knowledge of them own history is like a tree without a root. And if you don‚t know where you‚re coming from, you‚re not gonna know where you‚re going.” Even as he uplifts the black race, Capleton always makes a point of clarifying that he does not seek to alienate any race. “We are not being racial nor prejudiced star,” he says. “Becaw we know Jah is for everyone. But where history and prophesy in concerned, that is our witness and we have to be ourself, and we cannot hide from the truth. Caw we woulda be a traitor and a sellout to ourself. And you cannot sell out yourself.” Soon thereafter came the song “Tour” a blazing state of the dancehall report written in the weeks following the slaying of Panhead and Dirtsman, two of Capleton’s fellow artists. That song not only became an anthem of the roots revival within the dancehall, but a hip hop flavored remix of that song hit the Billboard charts, opening up a huge new audience to Capleton’s messages of righteousness. There followed a relationship with Def Jam records, who released two Capleton albums, Prophecy and I-Testament, which featured memorable collaborations with rap stars like Method Man and Q-Tip. Both records were warmly accepted by the international audience, but as the millennium drew to a close, Capleton sensed that it was time to return to his core audience. He had work to do. “I have to be myself, right? And I only can be me,” he reasons. “So whichever way fi make me be me, I work with dat. Y’understand.” Capleton is now at the height of his powers. 1999 and 2000 brought a ceaseless string of sound system favorite and dancehall chart toppers like the anti-violence anthem “Jah Jah City” and “Good In Her Clothes,” a message of respect for the sisters who carry themselves like Empresses rather than. But even as he completes his mission of upliftment, Capleton has had many critics. One of his biggest hits, in fact, is addressed the naysayers in the press and the ivory towers of power. “Critics won’t leave I alone,” chats the Prophet. “They say they can’t take the fire weh me put pon Rome” Many of Capleton’s songs “and most of his critics” make mention of this blazing fire. Capleton hopes to clear up the confusion once and for all. “Is not really a physical fire. Is really a spiritual fire, and a wordical fire, and a musical fire. You see the fire is all about a livity. But is people get it on the wrong term. People get confused. So when a man say ‘more fire’ him think that mean say you fi go light the cane field or go light the church.” Fire, Capleton explains, is a way of reminding one‚s brother that they are going astray. “That way a man know say him doing something wrong. That even give him the urge to know say Yo check up on yourself. What you’re doing is not right, or else him would not say ‘Fire fi dat,’ or ‘Burn dat’ or ‘More fire.'” “If we go check it back now,” he continues, “fire is for the purification of earth, anyhow you check it. This earth itself have to even emerge from the literal fire also, which is the volcanic activity, we a talk bout lava. The hottest element to rise us in the morning is the sun. The water cleanse, but it’s still the support from the fire that burn the water, burn out of the bacteria so the water coulda heal we fi cleanse. The herb heal, but it’s still the fire fi burn the herb so the herb coulda heal we also.” Capleton’s discography includes Number One Pon the Look Good Chart — 1991, Lotion Man — 1991, Alms House — 1993, Good So — 1994, Prophecy — 1995, I-Testament — 1997, One Mission (compilation) — 1999, More Fire — 2000, Still Blazin’ — 2002, Voice of Jamaica, Vol.3 — 2003, Praises To The King — 2003, The People Dem — 2004, Reign of Fire — 2004, Duppy Man (featured with Chase & Status), Free Up — 2006, Hit Wit Da 44 Rounds — 2007, Rise Them Up — 2007, Bun Friend — 2008, Yaniko Roots — 2008, Jah Youth Elevation — 2008 and Iternal Fire — 2008.</image:caption>

He was also one of the most prolific, cutting scores upon scores of singles, and dozens of albums. Although the DJ’s sun began to set at the end of the decade, I-Roy continued to record sporadically up to the ’90s, by then, though, his life had taken a tragic turn.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artists - the abyssinians - the abyssinians</image:title>
<image:caption>The roots harmony vocals trio the Abyssinians was formed in 1968 by founding members Donald Manning, Bernard Collins and Linford Manning. It was in 1969 with their release “Satta Massagana” recorded on Coxson Dodd’s Studio One label—a Rastafarian hymn based on the Ethiopian Amharic language, that launched them into the ranks of Reggae music greats. “Satta Massagana” became one of reggae’s most popular songs; becoming an anthem that was heard on the radios, in the dancehalls and in the churches of Jamaica. It was also covered by many other International artists’ including Third World. What followed were a string of hits of which included “Declaration of Rights,” “Yi Mas Gan.” and “Let My Days Be Long”. Early albums were a collection of singles recorded throughout the 1970’s on their own label—Clinch, of which included “Forward On To Zion” (1976) and “ARISE” (1978). The group separated in 1980, during the separation group co-founder Donald Manning performed internationally under the name The Abyssinians with his brother Carlton Manning (of Carlton & The Shoes) and singer David Morrison. In Jamaica, Bernard Collins performed on stage with longtime associate George Henry.. In 1989, Donald, Bernard and Linford joined together again to record over the next three years. These sessions resulted as the originally released album, “$19.95 + TAX” in 1995 with a very limited number of CD’s printed. Artists Only! Records realized the importance of this album and in 1998 re-titled and re-released this album as “REUNION”. “REUNION” now stands strong as one of The Abyssinians greatest albums. In 2004, Donald Manning & Bernard Collins reunited on stage for the first time in over ten years along with singer David Morrison, performing on tour across Europe in the winter, at Colorado’s Reggae on the Rocks in the summer, and in December on a two week tour along the California coast . In February and March of 2005 they returned for an extended tour of Europe, and during the Summer of 2005 they toured the West Coast throughout California, Oregon and the Rocky Mountains in Montana, Utah, and Colorado. During the Summer they also performed at The 12th Annual Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, The 10th Annual Monterey Bay Reggae Festival and The 4th Annual Soul Rebel Festival. Until Heartbeat Records reissued Satta Massagana (a.k.a. Forward Onto Zion) in 1993, few groups in reggae were more of an enigma than the Abyssinians. “Satta Massagana,” has been referred to as “reggae’s national anthem.” The recording session that yielded “Satta” was arranged and financed independently and clearly marked a turning point for reggae — lyrically, rhythmically, and spiritually.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Michael Campbell, a.k.a. Mikey Dread is one of the most influential performers and innovators in reggae music. His abilities, technical expertise, and unique vocal delivery combine to create a unique sound that tells the listener emphatically that it is the “Dread at the Controls.” Perhaps Mikey’s work with The Clash has garnered him with the most recognition, but his credentials and resume started long before his eye-opening production on several releases with the renowned Punk Stars from London. His work and interaction with The Clash was a significant event in the integration of reggae into popular music throughout the world. The album, “Black Market Clash”, is a brilliant fusion of late 1970’s punk rock and a heavy reggae bass and drum line. The reggae aspect of The Clash’s album distinguished their sound from the other punks that emerged in the 1970’s. Soon thereafter, it was a must for just about every punk band to have a reggae cover song on their album. Mikey was the first Producer ever to produce a UK chart hit for The Clash” Bank Robber” and later produced several reggae cuts on their internationally recognized Album “Sandinista.” Mikey’s avid interest in reggae music led him to acquire an immense collection of crucial vinyl which he used to gain notoriety as a young DJ and audio engineer with the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) where he began his broadcasting career in 1976. There he developed his own unique broadcasting style, which has been adopted by virtually every reggae radio show in Jamaica and the world today. His radio show, which became known as “Dread at the Controls,” was firmly established as the Number One Radio Show in Jamaica. Mikey was awarded Top Radio Personality of the Year in 1977-1978.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artists - heavyweight dub - heavyweight dub</image:title>
<image:caption>Veteran Chicago drummer Ted Sirota founded his latest band, Ted Sirota’s Heavyweight Dub, in 2013. An accomplished Jazz drummer and leader of Ted Sirota’s Rebel Souls, Sirota began practicing and playing Reggae drums along with his favorite records as a teenager in the early 1980’s. Sirota modeled his style after the great Jamaican drummers of the era – Carlton Barrett, Sly Dunbar, Style Scott, Grizzly Nesbitt, Santa Davis, Lloyd Knibb, Horsemouth Wallace and others. Sirota began working professionally as a Reggae and Soca/Calypso drummer while studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Sirota performed up and down the New England Coast with, amongst others, Hot Like Fire – one of Boston’s premier Reggae and Soca bands. After moving back to the Windy City in 1992, Sirota quickly became active on the Chicago Reggae scene playing with various groups at The Wild Hare, Exedus II and many other venues. Eventually, Sirota drifted away from the local Reggae scene to concentrate on the formation of his Jazz ensemble, Ted Sirota’s Rebel Souls, and his steady Saturday night tenure with Sabertooth at the world famous Jazz club, The Green Mill. With Rebel Souls Sirota continued to play and write Jamaican inspired music, albeit filtered through the lens of Jazz improvisation. After releasing five critically acclaimed records with Rebel Souls on the Naim (UK) and Delmark labels, touring Europe and the U.S., and performing at the 2004 and 2010 Chicago Jazz Festival, Sirota decided to branch out and revisit his first musical love – Reggae (concentrating on the instrumentally focused Dub sub-genre). Sirota assembled a stellar cast of Chicago musicians and enlisted Anthony Abbinanti, leader of The Drastics, to live dub mix the band and add electronics to the sonic palette. The remaining members of Heavyweight Dub are some of Chicago’s finest: Jason Matula-Bass Brian Citro-Guitar Tom Vaitsas-Keys Matthew Davis-Trombone Roy McGrath-Tenor Sax Chris Paquette-Percussion Cosmos Ray – Vocals Yanira Marin – Vocals In April of 2013, less than a week after the bands’ first gig, Sirota came into contact with legendary Jamaican engineer and Dub pioneer Hopeton O. Brown, AKA “The Scientist”. After a serious phone discussion about music, the pair planned to record together and quickly embarked on a successful Kickstarter campaign that reached its’ goal of $25,000 and enabled Sirota to fly The Scientist from L.A. to Chicago, where the band recorded their debut album with the “Dub Chemist” at the controls. The resulting musical document, “The Scientist Meets Ted Sirota’s Heavyweight Dub” was released in September 2013 on Sirota’s own Liberated Zone Records, and began turning Dub heads around the globe. With Heavyweight Dub, Sirota aspires to resurrect the full, rich, fat sound of the “Golden Era” of Reggae music. Taking his cue from the great Jamaican studio bands and musicians of the 70’s & early 80’s, Sirota hopes to put some of the spotlight back on the fine musicianship that was the foundation of Ska, Rocksteady, and Reggae music, but has taken a back seat to “star” singers in recent decades. Although Heavyweight Dub is dedicated to the Roots tradition, they continue to look to the future by experimenting with sound, electronics, and incorporating modern riddims into their original compositions. As critic Anderson Muth aka “The Groove Thief” recently wrote, “The future of dub is the present. Ted Sirota’s Heavyweight Dub has met The Scientist, and what has emerged is pure heavy, funky, hazy dub. Ted Sirota and his deep ensemble of musicians hold their own on this impressive overture to dub’s golden age, when the b-side was in demand on the 7”s, while not ignoring the times we live in. If you know dub you definitely want to hear this.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Meditations were formed in late 1974, when Danny Clarke left The Righteous Flames, recruiting Ansel Cridland (previously of The Linkers) and Winston Watson. After releasing singles credited to the individual members, they began recording as The Meditations in late 1976, shortly after which they released their biggest hit, “Woman Is Like a Shadow”, which sold over 45,000 copies in its first month of release. They recorded in the mid-1970s for producers such as Dobby Dobson, Joseph Hoo Kim, and Lee “Scratch” Perry, their righteously Rastafarian style gaining comparisons with The Mighty Diamonds. Their first album, Message From The Meditations, was released in 1977. The Meditations sang backing vocals on a number of Bob Marley songs, including “Blackman Redemption,” “Punky Reggae Party,” and “Rastaman Live Up”, as well as providing backing for Gregory Isaacs, Jimmy Cliff and The Congos (on their Heart of the Congos album). They appeared at the One Love Peace Concert in April 1978, officially a commemoration of the 12th anniversary of Haile Selassie’s state visit to Jamaica, but more famous for the handshake between Michael Manley and Edward Seaga when they joined Bob Marley on stage. The Meditations 1983 album, No More Friend was produced by Linval Thompson and featured The Roots Radics, and saw them adapting to the prevailing dancehall sound. Cridland left the group, leaving Clarke and Watson to record 1988’s For The Good of Man without him, but they were reunited for 1993’s Return of The Meditations. They have subsequently toured the United States and Europe. All three members are now based in the US – Clarke in Phoenix, Arizona, Watson in Seattle, Washington, and Cridland in New York City.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Skanking Lizard originated in Chicago in 1978. The band was started by a culmination of friends who had the common bond of friendship and a love for reggae music. Originally: the band consisted of Alan (Blood) Lery: on vocals: Ken Sutchar (Keyboards): Tom Sarelas (Drums): Dennis Sarelas (Percussion): Dan Gordon (Bass): Rick Miller (Rhythm Guitar): and Jerry Smolinsky (Lead Guitar). This line up of Jewish Northside musicians became Chicago’s original performing reggae band. During this time: the Lizard concentrated on developing their own sound: which incorporated American roots with reggae rhythms. After nearly two years of successful concert dates: the band discontinued performing due to conflicting professional goals. In the fall of 1981: the band reformed with original members: Lery: Sutchar: Sarelas: and original drummer: Tom Sarelas. Lizard also added George Kolmar on guitar and Jon Scaccia on bass: who after many years on the rock circuit decided reggae music was their future. In the 1980’s they became one of Chicago’s favorite Festival bands. Skanking Lizard toured with the likes of Toots and the Maytals: Mighty Diamonds: Steel Pulse: Neville Brothers: and the B-52’s. They released Jesse James/Mushroom in 1983: which made Jamaica’s Top 40 List. Over the years they collected 8 Martin’s International Reggae Awards. In 1984 lead singer Alan “Blood” Lery releases “Kingston Meets Chicago” which was recorded at Channel One in Kingston: Jamaica. The record featured Reggae artist Santa Davis on Drums: Ranchie McLean on Bass: and Skully on Percussion. The producer of the record was Jimmy Becker: famed Reggae studio harmonica player: who also was a member of Skanking Lizard in the early 1980’s. Skanking Lizard performed well into the 1990’s. Their music has been preserved and is still enjoyed by many today.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A living lesson in fortitude, the vocal trio of Cecil “Skeleton” Spence, Albert “Apple Gabriel” Craig, and Lascelle “Wiss” Bulgin overcame adversity, illness, and poverty to become one of the finest roots groups in Jamaica’s history. All three had been afflicted by polio and first became acquainted, albeit briefly, at Kingston’s Mona Rehabilitation Clinic. Of the trio, Bulgin appeared least likely to emerge a singing sensation. He spent much of his childhood at a variety of rehabilitation centers and in his teens began working for a tailor. Craig, in contrast, initially did seem destined for a musical career and for a while attended the famed Alpha Cottage School. This illustrious institution, founded in 1880 and run by Catholic nuns, is renowned for its musical training. Many of the island’s greatest stars passed through its doors, including members of the Skatalites and drummer Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace. However, Craig found the tough discipline and rigid atmosphere oppressive and ran away at 14 into a life of homelessness and poverty. After an equally bright start, Spence’s life also took a severe downturn. As a preteen, he played xylophone in a youth band, with whom he appeared on national television. Although physically disabled, he was a gifted athlete and in his teens he was selected for the Jamaican Wheelchair Basketball team. But his conversion to Rastafarianism put an end to all that in 1969; he was dropped from the team and returned to Kingston. It was serendipity that he bumped into Craig soon after, and fate intervened again, to bring the pair back into touch with Bulgin. The three teens had individually all previously converted to rastafarianism, now their shared faith and childhood experiences helped forge a strong friendship. Leaving behind their old lives, the trio now spent their time hanging out together and busking for money around Kingston. They spent the next six years singing for their suppers and by 1975, Israel Vibration was a vocal force to be reckoned with. However, their initial attempt at recording was abortive as the one track they did cut, the Ernest Hookim-produced “Bad Intention,” never saw release. The following year, an answer to their prayers arrived when members of the Rastafarian religious group the Twelve Tribes of Israel agreed to finance a single by the trio. Israel Vibration went into Treasure Isle studio with producer U- Booth and recorded the single “Why Worry” and a new version of “Bad Intention” for its flip. The group’s exquisite dread sound and militant cultural themes made an instant impression and the trio now found themselves on-stage opening for the likes of Bob Marley and Dennis Brown. In 1977, Israel Vibration began work on their follow-up, “The Same Song,” with producer Tommy Cowan. By the time they were done, the group had another hit song and a debut album of stunning proportions, which was titled after the single. A de rigueur dub version, Israel Tafari, accompanied the full-length and was equally powerful. On the strength of these, the trio was signed to the British EMI subsidiary Harvest, who released Same Song in Britain. 1979 brought the Unconquering People album, and another popular single, “Crisis.” And even if this set was not quite as dread as its predecessor, tracks like “Mr. Taxman” and “We a de Rasta” remain classics of cultural roots. Not surprisingly, Israel Vibration went down a storm at that year’s Reggae Sunsplash. The trio’s deeply devotional songs, cultural themes, inspirational lyrics, and original take on the roots style had struck a chord with reggae fans around the world. Thus, it was a surprising decision that Israel Vibration recorded their next album, 1981’s Why You So Craven, with legendary dancehall producer Junjo Lawes. In many ways, it was a failed venture and the trio was so dissatisfied, they walked out before the sessions were complete. Bringing in the vocal trio the Tamlins, Lawes carried on without them and the resulting album, while not a total disaster, certainly lacked the spirit of its predecessors. Even an avid response at 1982’s Reggae Sunsplash could not convince the trio that their future lay in a Jamaica where dancehall now reigned supreme (Live at Reggae Sunsplash, a split album from Israel Vibrations and the Gladiators, bears witness to their performance). Thus they relocated to New York City, perhaps believing that the large immigrant community could sustain them, or that America was now ready to embrace roots. They were wrong on both counts. A few occasional live appearances aside, the group swiftly disappeared from view. All three attempted solo careers, but only Bulgin made it on to record; his Mr. Sunshine album paired him with the Freedom Fighters Band. In 1987, the trio decided it was stronger together than apart, re-formed, and approached the RAS label. Although labelhead Doctor Dread had shown no interest in their solo efforts, he was enthusiastic about a reunion and quickly signed them to RAS. Strength of My Life appeared the following year, and aided by the Roots Radics, it found Israel Vibration as vibrant as ever. The trio now settled down for the long haul, and although their sound was no longer on the scene’s cutting edge, they continued putting out strong sets. 1990 brought three albums, Praises, its dub companion Dub Vibration, and Israel Dub, drawn from the Strength of My Life set. The next year’s Forever found the trio in a surprisingly comic mood, taking aim at themselves, dancehall, as well as contemporary issues. In 1992, a taste of the Vibrations’ live power was delivered up on Vibes Alive, which was recorded at a show in Santa Cruz the previous October. Besides showcasing the trio’s unique vocal styling, the album captures the Roots Radics at their fiercest. 1993’s IV, and its dub companion IV Dub, gave heart to all those who believed that roots was fast becoming little more than a world lovefest. The album’s militancy, notably on “Naw Give Up the Fight,” proved the trio’s own passionate cultural concerns and dread roots were not fading. The equally powerful On the Rock followed two years later and was also accompanied by a dub set. Then, in 1996, the group released their first single in years, the infectious “Feeling Irie,” taken from their new album, Free to Move. This attempt to push the band’s profile higher into the mainstream came to naught, the trio had already built up a loyal fan base and remained a successful live act, as 1997’s Live Again proved. Unlike its live predecessor, this time around Israel Vibrations packed the album with crowd-pleasing favorites. It was nine years since the trio had re-formed and signed to RAS; they’d been recording and performing steadily since, but Craig was no longer happy with their current path. In 1997, he left the trio to again pursue a solo career. His debut album, Another Moses, featured his own backing band, the Zionists. Continuing on as a duo, Spence and Bulgin reappeared in 1999 with a new studio album, Pay the Piper, and proved that Israel Vibrations would not be defeated by this defection. Jericho following hot on Piper’s heels in the new year, while 2000 also saw the release of the limited-edition Power of the Trinity three-CD box set; Dub Combo appeared in summer 2001. Acknowledging Craig’s longtime contribution to the group, the set is evenly divided between the trio, with each disc devoted to one individual member’s greatest compositions. Israel Vibrations’s career shows no signs of slowing, and the group has firmly carved a secure niche out of what once seemed an impenetrable surface. Their popularity seems assured, and they remain a vibrant live act and an always intriguing studio group. Jo-Ann Greene, Rovi</image:caption>

<image:title>Artists - CULTURE - CULTURE</image:title>
<image:caption>Culture has long been reggae’s preeminent harmony group. Born in the 70’s golden age of reggae, the ever viable Culture has garnered continual US and international acclaim for its long series of classic “roots” albums. Culture’s legendary “Two Sevens Clash” (Shanachie) was Reggae Album of the Year in 1977 and is acknowledged by Rolling Stone Magazine (April 11, 2002) as #25 of the 50 all time coolest records (the only reggae album to make the list). Culture’s music, featuring the shining lead vocals of Joseph Hill, is solidly roots, perfectly executed and delivered with genuine emotional fervor. Joseph Hill’s devotion to the traditional Rastafarian values of purity, simplicity and justice is exemplified by Culture’s lyrical themes. Milo Miles, writing for The New York Times, named Culture as “the leading exponent of ‘conscious reggae’”. Hill’s message is clear and uplifting. His songwriting abilities are outstanding and music reviewers have lauded his achievements for two decades. In 1976 Joseph and his cousin Albert Walker had formed a trio whose name evolved into Culture with the release of the mythic “Two Sevens Clash.” Joseph Hill performed solo under the name Culture and recorded several projects during the early eighties; he and Albert subsequently reunited and produced a long series of critically acclaimed recordings. In fact, Culture’s entire body of work (over 28 albums) can be recommended almost without exception. Noted albums such as “Nuff Crisis”, “Cumbolo,” and “Wings of a Dove” virtually define the “roots” genre. On August 19, 2006 while on tour in Europe, Joseph Hill passed suddenly and decisions for the future of the tour and the group had to be made quickly. The European promoters of the upcoming dates requested the group to continue the tour as a Tribute to Joseph Hill. It was then that his son Kenyatta stepped away from the soundboard and picked up his father’s microphone. Kenyatta was familiar with all of the music and was perfect for the role of new lead singer for Culture. The tour went on without pause and show after show, audiences, promoters and critics alike were amazed at the way in which Kenyatta was so much like his father onstage while introducing an element of his own. One critic’s comment stands out. He summed it up by saying “It was more magic than tragic”. It happened again in Bahia Brazil at a festival on Sept 2. The final proof that Kenyatta was the logical choice took place in Jamaica at the memorial concert for Joseph Hill on the weekend of the funeral. There was no doubt that when Kenyatta stepped up and performed, that he was the highlight of the star studded night. Since then Culture with Kenyatta now firmly established as legitimate leader and vocalist of this seminal band have continued to grace stages worldwide. The latest brilliant tribute to Joseph Hill by Kenyatta titled “Live On” has Kenyatta performing 14 Classic Culture hits in a unique blend of classic Culture updated by a very talented son of a legend.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Mighty Diamonds—Donald “Tabby” Shaw, Fitzroy ”Bunny” Simpson and Lloyd “ Judge” Ferguson formed in 1969 in the Trenchtown area of Kingston, Jamaica. They are the most consistent and long-running vocal trio in Jamaican musical history and for the past 41 years have been entertaining and educating the world with their sweet harmonies and conscious lyrics. With their soulful harmonies and polished performances, they quickly became known as the young group with the Motown sound. Their first recordings at Dynamic Sounds eventually led them to their classic hit “Shame and Pride” in 1973. Their first hit singles “ Country Living” and “ Hey Girl” were recorded on the Channel One label. After touring the US with Toots and the Maytals, the group signed to Virgin Records in 1975 and recorded four albums. Their debut album “ Right Time”, released on Virgin has become a classic. By 1982, “Pass the Kutchie” from the album ‘Changes’ had become an international hit and has since been covered by Musical Youth, whose version “Pass the Dutchie” has also been a hit all over the world. Tabby, Bunny and Judge have produced over 40 albums in their long career. The trio has toured the world extensively and has a strong following in Europe and Japan as well as in the US. In Jamaica they are forever loved. On stage antics of the Mighty Diamonds are reminiscent of the Four Tops with their animated hand gestures and energetic footwork. Favorites of the dance hall crowd, roots or progressive audiences. The Mighty Diamonds continue to achieve stardom on their own terms, wrapping a militant message in some of the prettiest melodies around. Even with their mushrooming international popularity, the Mighty Diamonds have not forgotten their roots which come from the unique cultural potpourri of Jamaica with its harsh ghetto realities and its irresistible reggae pulse. The Mighty Diamonds are remarkable for the fact that the three founding members have remained together, despite the ever-changing and cut-throat music business, for 41 years — and counting! They find strength and inspiration in their faith in Rastafari and their love of Jah. Their message is one of unity, love and at times, rebellion in the face of injustice. Their unquestionable reputation for a stylized traditional and polished sound has earned them prominence as a model reggae harmony trio. On Sunday November 1, 2009, in celebration of the 79th Anniversary of the coronation of Haile Selassie—TSO Productions and the Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music held their 5th annual Reggae Culture Salute at Nazareth High School Performance Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Mighty Diamonds were awarded a Congressional Proclamation from Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke, of the 11th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York along with a Citation from Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough President and the first ever Award for Excellence from TSO Productions and the Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Known as the “Black Cinderella” and “Mother Culture,” Sister Carol has led the way for women in reggae. Her music is rich with cultural heritage and infused with a vital social consciousness that permeates every aspect of life in the new illennium. Many were introduced to Sister Carol through the Jonathan Demme movies Something Wild and Married to the Mob, but she has also had a prolific music career during the past 20 years, that has included over 8 albums , a Grammy nomination, several world tours, and network television appearances. Her music carries a social message for people all over the world Sister Carol was born Carol Theresa East, January 15 1959 in Kingston Jamaica. She is also known as the “Black Cinderella” and “Mother Culture”. She is a Grammy nominated singer, DJ, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, educator and humanitarian. Her odyssey began in the ghetto of Denham Town, Kingston in the midst of the exploding Jamaican music scene and has grown to become one of Jamaica’s top entertainers and a Global Icon. Her formative years were spent at St Anne’s Primary School and Mico-Practicing All-Age School. Her father Howard East was a senior engineer who dedicated his life, to his career at RJR (Radio Jamaica Rediffusion), the number one radio station during that time. He was also a very important part of the Studio One and Treasure Isle sound. He regularly participated in sessions with the legendary “Clement Coxsone Dodd.” These early influences not only left an indelible mark on her heart, but also drew her closer to the infusion of the music industry. In 1973, at the age of 14 her family immigrated to Brooklyn NY. The thriving dancehall scene of New York City led this young rising star to a path that would acknowledge her talents with multiple awards, television appearances, sold out concerts and movies. Following in the footsteps of her mentor and friend DJ Brigadier Jerry, her musical career began after winning talent contests in both Kingston and New York. Sister Carol was offered an opening slot for one of Jamaica’s finest vocal trios, The Mediations who had been the harmony backup vocals for Bob Marley. This opportunity opened the door for her to record her first two records “Liberation for Africa” on the Serious Gold Label 1983 and “Black Cinderella” on Jah Life Label 1984, bringing her greatest talents, personality and vibe to a wider audience establishing herself firmly in the dancehall/DJ movement. During this time she dominated the music scene winning the coveted “Best Female DJ” for 5 consecutive years from 1983 — 1987. With these accolades behind her, in 1989 she established her own “Black Cinderella Record Label”. In the midst of her success as an artist she continued to pursue an education attending City College of New York where she obtained a B.Sc. degree in education in 1984. A true testament of her resilient spirit and energy spans nearly three decades in a male dominated industry, Sister Carol is a trailblazer for women in reggae. <image:title>Artists - LUCIANO - LUCIANO</image:title>
<image:caption>With the release of his landmark CD “Where There Is Life” in 1995, Luciano emerged as one of the most important reggae singers in decades and the greatest hope for roots reggae’s survival in the digital dancehall era. Since that much acclaimed release, Luciano’s music has been consistently praised for imparting sentiments of spiritual salvation, edification and humanitarian upliftment. In these troubled times, Luciano’s engaging baritone voice resonates like a divinely ordained instrument possessing the power to comfort souls from all walks of life. While many of his so called “conscious” contemporaries have faltered by recording songs that glorify wanton sex and random violence as a means of topping the charts, Luciano has held steadfast to enriching principles; these positive lyrical themes have justifiably earned him the title of The Messenger. However, the humble singer also refers to himself as the child of a king which was the title of his penultimate CD for VP Records. “We are all children of the Most High God and as a Rasta man, I acknowledge that I am a child of Emperor Haile Selassie I because all of his teachings are in my songs,” he explains. “I am a child of a king and I just want my family and my fans to receive the blessings that God has given through me as a messenger and an instrument of peace.” Luciano estimates to have done at least 40th album; the prolific artist releases three (full length) CDs per year. “I have so much music and messages, that I cannot be holding it inside of me,” he declares. “From a management point of view, they would like to see me cooling out for a while but if a bird doesn’t sing, tell me if that bird is happy?” Music has run deeply throughout Luciano’s life. Born Jepther Washington McClymont on October 20, 1964 in Davey Town, a small community located atop a hilly region on the road to Mandeville in the central Jamaican parish of Manchester. Luciano was raised in the Adventist church and sang in the church choir. His father Arthur passed away when Luciano was just 11 years old. He left behind a guitar he had built and as Luciano recalls, “through those early years, I fell in love with the guitar and started to learn to play, which I realised was showing love and respect to my father.” His beloved mother Sophie, who struggled to raise Luciano and his eight siblings, is also a gifted singer. As he grew older, Luciano sang in local youth clubs and took the mic at local sound system dances. In the late 80s, he arrived in Jamaica’s bustling capital Kingston hoping to transform his musical talent into a flourishing career. He sold oranges in the marketplace as means of initially supporting himself but when a drought restricted that year’s orange crop, he returned to Mandeville. However, the music beckoned so it wasn’t long before Luciano went back to Kingston, this time with even greater determination to succeed. He worked as an upholsterer by day and at night he sought recording opportunities in various studios. It was suggested by one of his mentors, Homer Harris, that the name Jepther McClymont did not have the requisite charisma to propel the career of an aspiring entertainer; Jepther was (professionally) re-christened as Luciano, a name that parallels his extraordinary vocal skills alongside those of the world-renowned operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti. The name was also somewhat prophetic: “Luci” means bearer of light and within a few years Luciano would shine as one of the brightest lights in the Jamaican music constellation. As the 1990s progressed, Luciano recorded for a few producers but failed to make any significant headway until he met Freddie McGregor. “Shake It Up” (a cover version of Cheryl Lyn’s RnB hit) recorded for Freddie’s Big Ship label became a number one hit in the UK in 1993 and was featured on Luciano’s first release for VP Records “After All”. But due to Freddie’s hectic touring commitments, he was unable to devote sufficient time to developing Luciano’s singer/song writing skills. However the singer soon found an ideal collaborator in producer Phillip “Fatis” Burell of Xterminator Records whose releases were characterised by Rastafarian imbued themes and intricately crafted roots rock rhythms played by some of Jamaica’s finest musicians. Fatis, who also took on the managerial role in Luciano’s career, brought the gifted singer’s talents to the musical forefront on cuts like “Poor and Simple”, “Chant Out” and “One Way Ticket”, the latter regarded as one of the finest repatriation anthems ever written and a song that continually summons enthusiastic responses in Luciano’s breathtaking live performances. With the release of “Where There Is Life” for Island Records Jamaica Luciano’s deeply devotional yet accessible lyrics and the beautiful melodies of “Its Me Again Jah”, “Your World and Mine” and “Lord Give Me Strength” coupled with Fatis’ contemporary one drop rhythms catapulted the singer to the top of the reggae charts, toppling (at least temporarily) the decade long reign of deejays rapping x-rated lyrics over digitised dancehall beats. Luciano and Fatis (alongside prominent musicians such as saxophonist Dean Frasier and drummer Sly Dunbar) created several exceptional releases including 1997’s “The Messenger” and 1999’s “Sweep Over My Soul”. Although they parted ways in 1999 due to artistic differences within the Xterminator camp, Luciano consistently acknowledges Fatis’ essential role in establishing the foundation for his farreaching success. The Messenger has since ascended to even greater musical heights with “A New Day” (2001) “Serve Jah” (2003), “Serious Times” (2004), all for VP Records who also released “Child of A King” (2006) and “United States of Africa” (2010) all of which contributed towards the crowning glory of his exalted career thus far. His most recent album “Rub-A-Dub Market released in (2011) just proves that Luciano is like unto a good vintage wine, which just keeps getting better and better the more it matures. Luciano states that, “Over the years I have listened to other international icons like Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, and Jim Reeves. By listening to all these great brothers, I have learned to appreciate other works and see that there are no barriers in music. Although I am well known as a cultural reggae singer, I have an international message and so I cannot deliver it just to reggae fans. I have to extend it to people from all walks of life.” Spoken like a truly benevolent messenger and the globally minded child of a king.</image:caption>
